How to make a Trek character, step 2.
Gathering the materials, getting the patterns.
Ok, so, now that you've decided which character you're going to make, and you've got the pictures you need, now what? No, no, put that hook away, we aren't up to crocheting yet.
First, you will need yarn. Here's a list of the Brands/colors I used:
You don't need to buy all this yarn, just the colors for the person you're making!
Red Heart Super Saver
Black ( for pants and boots, hair on some characters.)
#0336 Warm Brown (Kirk's hair)
#0319 Cherry Red (For red shirt characters, like Scott.)
#0334 Buff (light skin tones)
Chocolate Brown (dark skin tones, dark brown hair)
I love this Yarn! (Hobby Lobby's store brand.)
#120 Medium Blue (Blue Shirt characters, like Spock.)
Lion Brand Yarn Vanna's Choice
#158 Mustard (Gold Shirt characters, like Kirk, Sulu.)
So, basically, you need a skin color, hair color, shirt color, and pants color.
Extra stuff!
Safety eyes in appropriate color.
Yellow embroidery floss (for detailing on shirts)
gold colored sewing thread.
G size (4.25 mm) hook
scissors
sewing needles
yarn needles
Polyfil brand stuffing (Generic stuffing gets lumpy and stiff. The money you save wont be worth the bad results.)
printer ink and paper to print the patterns!
Now get the patterns. Since I didn't write these instructions, I can't post them here. But here's where to go to get them!
First, get the 'amigurimi dude' from crochetme! print the instructions.
Second, go to knotty_mom's journal and get the variation on the pattern. you will need to scroll down the page and find an entry titled January 8th, 2008
tapered limbs and flare leg pants
The instructions are part of that entry. Copy and paste that bit to a blank document in wordpad, (or whatever text editor you have) and print that page.
Third, go to Owly's hair tutorial. print those instructions.
Fourth, you need to know how to make an invisible decrease to avoid ugly gaps in the face! Click on link, the information you want is in post #1116 by Jaden. (About middle of page.)
Step 3: Ladies, start your hooks!
Now, follow the amigurimi dude pattern, with the variations on knotty mom's journal. Change to shirt color on row 9 of body and row 5 of arms. This is where you need the full figure picture.
When working the decreasing rounds on the head, work ALL
stitches in Front Loop Only! This will help hide the holes. You will
notice the back loop covering the holes. It sounds weird, but it works.
Once you get the head made, and before you attach it to body, follow Owly's hair tutorial and get the hair right. Add the Safety eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and any other details needed. You can use hair color for eyebrows. This is where you need the face photo I told you to get earlier.
Add this detail to the shirt: (If making an TOS character.)
Last row Work in black. sc around. Determine where the center front is. AT that point, work ONE DC around the post of the sc directly below in the row below.
Use the yellow embroidery floss for the stripes on shirt sleeves (TOS characters only.) Take a length of floss and fold in half. Twist tightly until it folds in half by itself. Wrap this twist around arm twice, securing with the gold sewing thread.
Use the yellow embroidery floss to make the Enterprise icon on the shirt.
Finish up any details remaining, and enjoy your toy.
Notice: So far, I've only made TOS Characters Kirk and Spock. I would welcome any notes or thoughts on making characters on other series. Also, any thoughts on how to make Uhura and Chappel's mini-dress and go-go boots would be most appreciated. contact me via email at
